Here are a few exciting paint trends we've seen this year that we love.
Traditional paint doesn't allow brick to "breathe"and will do long-term damage. With this in mind, we discouraged clients from painting brick for years. But no more. Our favorite new way to paint brick is with lime wash, which is basically a paint made from crushed shells. It's a natural stain that allows the brick to breathe and you can paint over it later if you wish. Lime wash also handles weather extremes well, making it a good choice for exterior projects in Minnesota. We've done a lot of lime wash projects this year and are stunned by the results, every single time. 10/10 would recommend this.
Once upon a time, we were taught that the baseboards should be a different color than the wall. These days it's not unusual to paint the trim, walls, and ceilings of a large space entirely in white. As windows become more effective at keeping external temperatures outside, our customers are installing larger windows to bring more natural light into their homes. White rooms look GREAT in natural light, especially with a dark wood floor to provide texture and contrast. White walls also photograph really well, which is important to people who take lots of pictures and videos of their daily lives.
Many trends return when new technologies fix old problems. With this in mind, you can now buy quality wallpaper that is easy to peel and stick on your walls. It's also much easier to remove than the wallpaper your parents and grandparents used. While we don’t expect to ever see homes fully covered in wallpaper in our lifetime, we are seeing new wallpapers used in small areas such as powder rooms and laundry rooms, where it looks attractive and effectively hides water stains. Don’t be afraid of wallpaper!
Accent walls are a great solution in areas where there are large wall sections without a door or window to break things up, such as a bedroom, dining room, or hallway. Typically these areas have lots of foot traffic and the wall may be bumped frequently - which means hanging artwork isn't advised. In these cases, painting one wall a different color is a great way to create visual excitement in a room. We've also seen homes with more detailing added to the accent wall for extra texture, as in the example above.
This is probably the biggest rule that we've seen busted in 2024. Thanks to new advances in paint technology, we are now comfortable recommending darker colors for home exteriors. If you followed our social media feed this past summer, you’ll know that we've painted a lot of darker homes this year and the results have been stunning.
