We've noticed a growing number of our clients choosing dark paint colors for their home exteriors, such as this stunning home (above) that we recently completed.
Until recently, most dark paint colors couldn't withstand the summer sun and would eventually fade or peel. But paint technology has come a long way in dealing with that problem, opening the door to a whole range of new color combinations and exciting possibilities for your home. There are many compelling reasons to consider going dark for your home's exterior.
The dark, sophisticated colors we're seeing look great in contrast to the greens and browns of nature in the summer. At night the interior lighting is especially visible in contrast to the dark exterior, pouring out of the windows and making the home feel warm and inviting when you arrive home on a snowy winter evening.
Dark paint allows you to hide or emphasize architectural features. For example, the photo below shows how we repainted a restaurant in charcoal gray to make the brightly colored doorways and signage stand out to patrons. You can use paint to similar effect on your home. If there's a window alcove that you love, adding white trim will make it pop. And leaving the trim dark around an unpopular feature can make it fade into the background, as we did with the restaurant windows below.
Dark colors tend to absorb more solar energy than lighter paint shades, which may translate to higher cooling costs in summer. But since Minnesota's climate has more cool weather on average, this will usually work to your advantage.
In short, we believe that dark home exteriors are here to stay. The next time your home is due for a new coat of paint, consider all of the exciting new paint options that are available to you.
