Ask Around

Once you have a clear idea of what you want to do, start reaching out for bids. A bid is NOT a contract; it simply gives you an idea how much you'll be spending. If the numbers aren't in your range, you can work with your contractor to figure out some shortcuts. Worst case is that you know how much you'll need to pay and you can start saving towards that goal.

Choose the Right Painters

Be sure to consider quality as well as cost when choosing your painting partners. A cheap paint job isn't a deal if the paint doesn't last or if the crew leaves a mess behind. Create a Timeline

If you pick a contractor in November for the following year, you'll have a lot of flexibility in specifying when they arrive. You can set a goal for completion and work backwards with your contractor to build a timeline to meet it. For example, if you want the house repainted by June 1, then you should get all the trees and shrubs trimmed back in April so the painters can do their work in May. Be sure to include some wiggle room in your timeline for bad weather.
