Have you ever heard of painting with pine tar?
Pine tar is a natural wood preservative that, like a paint or a stain product, protects wood structures from moisture penetrating into the wood and makes it difficult for algae and mildew to develop. It also protects the wood from drying out and cracking.
Treating wood with pine tar is a novel experience. You are literally painting with a brush dipped in tar. Since pine tar is a wholly natural product, the color of the tar can vary from tree to tree. To achieve a uniform color for the entire project, we generally mix all the cans of tar into a giant vat and paint it all in one go.
Pine tar has a distinct aroma. While some dislike it, most of us on the job sites love the scent. Either way, the odor will fade after a few days. Pine tar paint coats last 5-10 years, depending on the quality of the wood. As with any paint, hailstorms and other significant weather events may shorten the lifespan of this product.
Cityscape Painting has painted an entire house in pine tar and we loved the experience as well as the end result. If you’re interested in painting your home using a more eco-friendly painting product like pine tar, give us a call at (952) 469-5901.
